SWEET TREATS

Betty is just one of those people you take to immediately; sweet, clever, endearing and giving. If you volunteer to deliver meals to Betty, chances are you leave with a smile in your heart and a “sweet treat” in your pocket. Most likely a carry-over from days when she was still cooking and it was the neighborly thing to offer baked goods to guests, Betty still carries on her own tradition of giving. Substituting store-bought candies for her own culinary creations, Betty’s sentiment is still the same, a sincere and heartfelt thank you for visiting.

Betty’s daughter-in-law, Beth, first recommended Meals on Wheels to Betty because of her weight loss and the fact that she just wasn’t eating properly. She wanted to ensure Betty was consuming fresh, nutritious food every day, not sodium-laden processed food. “I didn’t realize at the time that the service is so much more than a meal,” Beth shares. “The volunteers that deliver give me a great sense of security knowing that while I am at work someone is checking in on Betty. I know I’ll receive a call right away if there is any kind of concern or if I am needed. With me caring for my bed-ridden mother and working full time, I just can’t be there every minute. It takes so much stress off my shoulders knowing these volunteers and Meals on Wheels really and truly care about her well-being. They have become a very valued network of friends for my mother-in-law. She really cherishes them.”

According to Betty, the thing she loves most about Meals-on-Wheels is, indeed, the fabulous volunteers. “I love when they come to visit. They are the BRIGHT SPOT in my day," shares Betty. “I don’t get out much anymore, only about once a month when I have my hair done and then again when I visit my doctor every three months. I’d be very down and depressed if it were not for my wonderful friends that deliver my meals. I’d only have my TV for company until my daughter-in-law visits in the evenings when she can. She’s truly an angel. And, so are my volunteers! Every single one who visits me is precious. I don’t know what I would do without them.”

Betty hopes the volunteers know just how much their visits mean to homebound individuals like herself. “In my book, the wonderful volunteers for Meals on Wheels are all angels too!”
